How to Get Tinnitus Relief

Severe tinnitus, or ear ringing, is a common but hard-to-treat condition. While there is no medical cure for tinnitus, various treatments and options are available. The following list of ideas can help you better manage your symptoms and get tinnitus relief.

A Few Tinnitus Do's and Don'ts

If you suffer with tinnitus should stay away from noisy places at all costs and make sure that they always have some form of hearing protection available. Even the low cost foam rubber earplugs will provide tinnitus relief!

People with tinnitis should avoid ototoxic medications (drugs that have a harmful effect on the organs or nerves connected with hearing and balance). These medications include:

Aminoglycoside antibiotics when given intravenously or by injection. Common names for this group of antibiotics include Gentamicin, Streptomycin, Amilkacin, Neomycin and Tobramycin. Quinine-based anti-malarial's (Choroquine) or anti-arrhythmic's (Quinidine) Platinum-based Chemotherapeutic agents (Cisplatin) Some doctors suggest avoiding the antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin) or the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Relafen (nabumetone).

Try to stay away from absolute absence of noise if you have ear ringing. In the absence of any sounds your auditory system will start playing tricks on you and the tinnitus will be amplified. Try to ensure that you have some sort of environmental noises around you. Ear ringing sufferers often play ambient music or even some type of "white noise" to mask the tinnitus levels.

Self-massage therapy has proven successful in providing tinnitus relief. Some tinnitus sufferers report a reduction in the tinnitus levels using self massage techniques. Tinnitus counsellers advise tinnitus patients to hold the ears close to the head and use the thumbs and index fingers to massage the outer edges of both ears, including the earlobes. Reflexologists suggest pressing or massaging the area below the last two fingers on the palm of each hand, and/or the sole of each foot between the little toe and the middle toe.

Some individuals find relaxation and meditation techniques to be useful in providing tinnitus relief. Obviously not all of these techniques will work for you so experiment a bit and find one that you are happy with and that does the job for you. Experts suggest trying mediation or soft, comforting music.
